The Local Area

Vienne department (86), in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region

The campsite is just a 5 minute walk from the village of Chalandray.  In the village, we have a wonderful boulangerie (who also deliver to site during mid and high season) selling fresh croissants, baguettes and pastries. There’s also a well stocked Spar shop which includes post office and tabac services plus a bar / restaurant, hairdressers and beauty salon.  For more choice, the nearest supermarket is Super U in Vouillé, a 10/15 minute drive.

The surrounding region has much to offer old and young alike, with the relatively flat landscape ideal for walking and cycling. There are many official walking routes around the village: you can download the maps here. If you are a keen cyclist, La Velo Francette running from Caen to La Rochelle passes through Parthenay, close to the campsite.

At only 20 minutes away, we are ideally situated for a visit to one of the most popular theme parks in France.  Futuroscope is a fantastic theme park packed with virtual reality rides, a spectacular evening show and new from 2024 a water park. There’s also the award-winning Puy de Fou just over an hour away – well worth a visit!

If golf is your passion, Golf de Forges is only 15 minutes away and also one of the largest golf courses in the country is just 39 km away near Loudun. If you prefer horses, Le Cadre Noir de Saumur National Horse Centre is an hour away in Saumur.

Children will love La Vallee des Singes at Romagne; Terre de Dragons, Indoor Crocodile Centre at Civaux; and Les Geants du Ciel at Chauvigny, where you can also explore the castle or try out the Velorail: a unique rail bike. It’s great fun.

If you are looking for history and culture, the vibrant city of Poitiers with its picturesque medieval centre is only a half hour drive away. Saumur, Chinon and Tours along the Loire Valley are all within easy reach so you can spend a day exploring the chateaux or sampling the wines at the local vineyards.
With so much beautiful countryside to explore and so many attractions in the Poitou-Charentes area, the problem will be deciding what to do!

This was our second year coming here and the second time did not disappoint. Excellent well-considered facilities, really friendly helpful owners, huge pitches with good shade so we never suffered from the heat even in a tent and a super relaxed community vibe that was never intrusive. Our daughter LOVED the pool which was never crowded even when the campsite was at capacity. Baker van visited every day (except Thursday and Sunday), fritte available daily and pizza on a Thursday. We’ll be back for sure

Our favourite site by far

We love this site !! Spent 2 weeks there last year and have just returned home after a lovely week here this year. The campsite is brilliant, massive pitches, a lovely pool where the kids spend most of the day having fun. Toilet and showers are immaculate all the time and so nice to have showers you can just turn on without having to press a button every few seconds. Delicious homemade wood fired pizzas available two evenings a week and the best frites !! But what makes the site amazing is the owners and their daughters who not only work extremely hard but from the moment you arrive treat everyone like friends and family. If you are looking for a relaxed family friendly campsite then you need to visit Camping du Bois Saint Hilaire you won’t be disappointed in fact you won’t want to leave !!!

“We stayed for a week in one of their Bell Tents. It was decked out with everything we needed. There was a BBQ and a shared outdoor kitchen that saved us buying stuff in order to cook. The location and the weather was perfect, and having a well maintained pool was a major plus. Everyone that we met at the campsite was warm and friendly too, which really added to the whole experience. I haven’t slept in a tent since Reading festival in 1995, so I was thinking I was going to rough it for a week. I was totally wrong – the facilities were spotless, showers warm, toilets all stocked with loo roll and access to hand sanitiser was available throughout the campsite. We had an amazing time. The kids had friends to play with, we had good company throughout the night and day. I can’t thank Henry and Kat enough. 2020 has been a rubbish year for everyone, and this holiday has brought back a bit of normality – if only for a week. But it was needed. So, thank you Camping du Bois de Saint Hilaire for bringing the Findlaters that silver lining, that we have craved. This place ticked every box. Till the next time, stay safe and keep it up!”
